Accessibility

We want this site to be usable by everyone, including people using a screen reader, a keyboard alone, magnification, or a browser configured for larger text and different colours.

What we have done

The site is built as plain, semantic HTML. That is the substance of the work, and everything below follows from it.

• Every page works without JavaScript. Nothing here needs a script to be read or navigated.
• Everything is reachable by keyboard, in an order that follows the page, with a visible focus outline.
• Text and background contrast is checked against WCAG 2.1 AA. Body text and headings exceed 4.5:1; large text and interface elements exceed 3:1.
• Text resizes to 200% without loss of content or function, because the layout is set in relative units.
• Every image carries alternative text, and images that are decoration carry none, so a screen reader does not announce them.
• Tables are real tables with header cells, so a screen reader can say which column a figure belongs to.
• Each edition declares its own language and direction, so Hebrew is read as Hebrew and right-to-left.
• Colour is never the only carrier of meaning. Where a price rises, it says so in words as well as in colour.

What we have not done

We do not use an accessibility overlay — one of the widgets that adds a floating button offering to change contrast or font size. We looked at them and decided against, for two reasons.

The first is that they do not do what they appear to do. An overlay sits on top of a page; it cannot fix markup underneath it, and the things that actually stop a screen reader — a missing label, a heading that is not a heading, a table without headers — stay broken with the widget installed.

The second is that people who need assistive technology already have it, tuned to how they work. An overlay that intercepts the page can interfere with it.

We would rather the page be right than have a button that says it is.

Where we are not there yet

This statement describes what we have built and tested ourselves. It is not a formal conformance audit, and this site has not yet been examined by a licensed accessibility surveyor. We intend to have that done.
