Hosting provider
HostGator
HostGator's entry plan is listed at $3.75 a month on a three-year term, which covers the whole of the first thirty-six months — so the total below is what those three years cost. The plan renews at $10.99 a month from year four.
Our assessment
Affordable for three years if you commit upfront, then jumps to double or triple the intro price depending on plan — mid-table cost overall, but the gap between what you pay first and what you pay later is wide.
What is good
- +Intro pricing lasts the full 36 months, not just the first year
- +cPanel included, which means no learning curve if you've hosted elsewhere
- +Free SSL and Cloudflare CDN on all plans
- +Phone support available from the Baby plan up
What to know first
- −Renewal price is 193% to 266% higher depending on plan
- −Storage limits are low — 10GB on Hatchling, 20GB on Baby — and the jump to 50GB costs $225 over three years
- −Chat-only support on the cheapest plan
- −Free domain and domain privacy are first-year-only, then paid
- −Shared infrastructure across Newfold's portfolio suggests resource contention

Someone who wants a three-year runway at a predictable low price and plans to reassess before renewal, or who values phone support and needs a control panel they've used before.Do not buy it for
Anyone who will auto-renew without noticing, or who needs more than 20GB of storage without jumping to a $500+ three-year commitment. The full read
HostGator's intro pricing runs for the full three years, which means the cheap rate lasts longer than most. The Hatchling plan costs $3.75/mo for 36 months, then $10.99/mo — nearly three times higher. Baby goes from $4.50 to $16.49, Business from $6.25 to $21.99. The three-year total for Hatchling is $135, which sits between the cheapest providers here and the premium tier, but renewal will cost $132 annually where the intro term cost $45.
Resources are tight across the board. Hatchling gets 10GB of SSD storage, Baby gets 20GB, Business gets 50GB. The Pro plan, at $13.95/mo intro, is sized for 400,000 visits a month and comes with 100GB, but renews at $29.69 — higher than anything else on this list. For most personal sites or small business use, storage will run out before traffic does.
Support structure splits by plan. Hatchling is chat only. Baby and above add phone support. That's a meaningful gap — if you need to talk through a problem in real time, the base plan won't do it. All plans include free SSL and Cloudflare CDN, which is standard now but still worth having.
The control panel is cPanel, which means the interface is familiar if you've hosted anywhere else in the last decade. Domain privacy is free for the first year on Business and Pro, then paid. The free domain on all plans is also first-year-only.
HostGator is owned by Newfold Digital, which also owns Bluehost. These are shared plans, so your site sits on a server alongside others — how many, and how heavily loaded, is not something HostGator publishes and not something anyone can measure from outside. Treat the uptime figure as a promise rather than a measurement.
The trade-off is clear: you get a long intro period and a recognised name, but you pay for both once that period ends. If you're certain you'll move or renegotiate before year four, the intro rate is competitive. If you're likely to stay and auto-renew, you'll be paying well above what you started at, and more than several providers here charge from the beginning.
