What to check before buying WordPress hosting
Updated Oct 25, 2026
Check the renewal price, not the promotional rate
The advertised monthly price is rarely what you pay long-term. HostGator charges 3.75 USD per month on its Hatchling plan, then 10.99 after thirty-six months. DreamHost Web Hosting Launch starts at 2.89 EUR monthly and becomes 10.99 after twelve months. Knowing the second price before you commit tells you what the hosting actually costs.
Confirm what 'unlimited' actually means
SherlockHost lists its Linux Hosting start plan at 2.49 GBP monthly with the same price at renewal, but claims of unlimited everything make what you actually receive impossible to judge from the pricing page. Look for stated limits on storage, bandwidth, and database size. Where none are given, contact support and ask what triggers an upgrade request.
Find out how support is reached
Check whether support runs through live chat, tickets, phone, or all three. Look for whether support is available around the clock or during business hours only. For managed WordPress plans, confirm whether the support team handles WordPress-specific issues or only server problems.
See if backups are included or cost extra
Some hosts include daily automated backups in the base plan. Others charge separately or leave backups entirely to you. If backups cost extra, factor that into the three-year total. If they are not offered, you will need a plugin or external service, which adds time and often another subscription.
Ask whether migration is free
Moving an existing WordPress site to a new host takes time if you do it yourself. Some providers include free migration as part of signup, either automated or handled by their team. Others charge for it or point you at documentation. Knowing this before you buy tells you whether switching will cost you hours or minutes.
Check the minimum contract length
The lowest advertised rate often requires paying for multiple years upfront. HostGator offers its 3.75 USD rate on a thirty-six-month term, with a three-year total of 135.00 USD. InterServer charges 2.50 USD for one month, then 7.00 monthly until you prepay a year or more, with a three-year total of 247.50 USD. If you are unsure the host will suit you, a plan that allows monthly billing after a short intro period costs more per month but less if you leave early.
Read the refund policy before paying
Most hosts offer a money-back window, often thirty days. Check whether it applies to the full amount or only hosting fees, excluding domain registration or setup charges. Check whether it applies if you paid for multiple years upfront or only to monthly billing. A clear refund policy matters if the performance or support does not match what the sales page promised.
